Solar Warranties Explained

Who warrants what

Every warranty on a solar system comes from either the installer who did the work or the manufacturer of the component. None of them come from us, because we did not make or fit anything.

That is why the written quotation matters more than anything on a website: it is the document that states which warranties apply to your system.

Panel product warranty

Covers defects in the panel itself. Commonly ten to twenty-five years depending on the manufacturer.

Panel performance warranty

Separately guarantees that output stays above a stated percentage over time, commonly to around twenty-five or thirty years. It is a different document from the product warranty and usually a different length.

Inverter warranty

Commonly five to twelve years, sometimes extendable at extra cost. This is the component most likely to be replaced during the system's life, so the term is worth comparing between quotes.

Battery warranty

Commonly around ten years, or a stated number of cycles or total energy throughput, whichever comes first — and usually written around retained capacity rather than simply working or not.

Workmanship warranty

From the installer, covering the installation itself. Length varies considerably between companies.

Insurance-backed guarantee

Where the installer offers one, it backs the workmanship warranty if the company ceases trading. Offered through the relevant consumer code. Ask whether it is included and what it covers.

Deposit protection

Where a deposit is taken, ask what protects it. Reputable installers working under a consumer code will have an answer.

What no warranty covers

Generation, savings, payback or export income. Nobody warrants those, and any company implying otherwise is one to avoid.
